The Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) has commissioned a state-of-the-art medical laboratory at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi, as part of its nationwide Hospital Support Programme (HSP) to enhance healthcare access.
The facility was inaugurated by NLNG’s Managing Director, Dr Philip Mshelbila, represented by Mrs Sophia Horsfall, General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development, according to a statement issued on Friday by Mrs Anne-Marie Palmer-Ikuku, the company’s Manager of Corporate Communication and Public Affairs.
Mshelbila stated that the project reflects NLNG’s dedication to strengthening diagnostic services and supporting clinicians and patients alike.
“The HSP initiative reinforces our belief in what is possible when private enterprise and public good align with purpose,” he said.
He added that the HSP is building a network of healthcare facilities across Nigeria, with a transformative impact on service delivery, medical confidence, and public trust in healthcare.
“We are delighted that Bauchi State partnered with NLNG, giving us the opportunity to actualise the company’s vision of improving lives sustainably through healthcare infrastructure,” he added.
NLNG, he noted, continues to lead private sector contributions to Nigeria’s healthcare sector, while also investing in energy, education, and infrastructure.
Professor Yusuf Jibrin, Chief Medical Director of ATBUTH, praised the facility, highlighting the urgent national need for advanced diagnostic centres to tackle challenges such as Lassa fever, antimicrobial resistance, and cancer.
“This laboratory is a fortress equipped with tools, technologies, and personnel to enable timely medical interventions,” he said.
He commended NLNG for going beyond conventional corporate social responsibility and announced that the hospital had developed a maintenance and operations framework to sustain the facility long-term.
Through the HSP, NLNG has provided similar infrastructure to approximately ten health institutions across Nigeria, supporting services in obstetrics, neonatal intensive care, occupational therapy, and neuromodulation rehabilitation.
