The National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) has commended Brazil for its vibrant display of Yoruba culture during the 2025 Rio de Janeiro Carnival.

Chief Biodun Ajiboye, Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of NICO, praised Brazil’s commitment to preserving Nigerian heritage, highlighting the prominence of Orisa chants and Yoruba-inspired themes at the event.

The 2025 Rio Carnival, held from February 28 to March 8 at the Sambadrome, attracted over eight million tourists.

Ajiboye noted that the cultural showcase reinforced the deep historical ties between Nigeria and Brazil.

“We are inspired by our Brazilian brothers and sisters, who have kept the Orisa tradition alive despite historical adversities. This grand celebration proves they remain true heirs of our heritage,” he stated.

Ajiboye also lauded Brazil’s commitment to religious tolerance and cultural inclusivity, emphasizing that Nigeria was eager to strengthen bilateral cultural relations.

To support this, he revealed plans for high-level cultural conferences in both nations and announced NICO’s initiative to host the World Orisa Congress in Nigeria annually.

This global gathering aims to attract Orisa devotees from around the world, positioning Nigeria as the epicenter of the spiritual tradition.

With an estimated 450 million adherents worldwide, Ajiboye believes the Orisa tradition deserves a major pilgrimage status, akin to Mecca and Jerusalem.

He further expressed confidence that deeper cultural collaborations would ensure the enduring legacy of Yoruba heritage across continents.

The Rio Carnival, dating back to 1723, is Brazil’s largest annual festival, renowned for its elaborate floats, samba school performances, and vibrant street parades.
