The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has approved the launch of the Sam Okwaraji Secondary Schools Soccer Championship, a nationwide tournament for secondary schools.

The approval, announced on Monday, follows the endorsement of the initiative by the Senate Committee on Sports Development, led by Senator Abdul Ningi.

The annual competition, established by the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, aims to honour the memory of the late Nigerian footballer who died in service during a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Angola at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, on 12 August 1989.

In a letter signed by Ruth David, Acting Director of Competitions, the NFF acknowledged the championship’s noble objectives, stating that it would inspire young players and support the development of grassroots football in the country.

The federation commended the foundation for its commitment to youth football and urged organisers to adhere strictly to FIFA’s established rules.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off later in the year.

Okwaraji, remembered for his devotion to the national team, prioritised national service over personal gain. His sacrifice remains a symbol of patriotism and dedication for Nigerian youth.
