Mrs Zubaida Umar, the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has emphasised the crucial role of local governments in disaster management.

Umar made this statement during a visit by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to NEMA Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

She highlighted the importance of collaboration between NEMA and ALGON to improve early warning systems, resource mobilisation, and grassroots interventions.

She urged ALGON to establish Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) in every local government to strengthen preparedness and response efforts.

According to Umar, these committees should be led by the Local Government Council Chairman or their representative.

She stressed that LEMCs would enhance early warning systems, improve local resource mobilisation, and ensure timely interventions during emergencies in their respective areas.

Umar also acknowledged the vital role local governments play in ensuring the success of disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.

“We remain committed to fostering a strong partnership with ALGON to ensure our strategies are inclusive, effective, and tailored to meet the unique needs of every community,” she added.

She reaffirmed NEMA’s commitment to building partnerships for a safer and more resilient Nigeria.

Earlier, Mr Bello Lawal, the National President of ALGON, stated that the visit was an opportunity to introduce ALGON’s new leadership to NEMA and discuss collaboration in grassroots disaster management.

He pointed out that with the granting of financial autonomy to local government councils, there was an increasing need for consultation and guidance from NEMA, particularly on the effective use of resources for disaster management initiatives.
