The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the brutal killing of one of its members, Bright Nda Owhor, who was reportedly murdered in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on July 5, 2025.
In a statement shared via his official X handle, NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, expressed outrage over the incident, describing it as “senseless and brutal” while demanding immediate justice.
“Bright Nda Owhor was a promising young legal practitioner whose life was cut short in a most senseless and brutal manner. His untimely death is not just a painful loss to his family and colleagues, but also a stark reminder of the deepening insecurity that continues to plague our society,” Osigwe said.
He emphasised that the NBA would not tolerate unchecked violence and impunity in a society that claims to be governed by law. “The right to life is the most fundamental of all rights, and its violation in such cruel fashion is unacceptable under any circumstances,” he added.
The NBA called for swift action, urging the Inspector-General of Police, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, and other security agencies to immediately investigate Owhor’s death.
“We demand that the perpetrators be identified, apprehended, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done, and swiftly too,” Osigwe declared.
The association also raised concerns about the rising insecurity in the country, warning that legal professionals could not continue to serve under the constant threat of violence and death.
“We urge the relevant authorities to take concrete steps to address the rising tide of insecurity affecting both citizens and legal professionals across the country,” Osigwe said.
The NBA extended its condolences to Owhor’s family, the Port Harcourt branch of the NBA, and the broader legal community. The association promised to closely monitor the investigation and ensure that justice is served.
“The NBA will not relent in pursuing justice for our slain colleague,” Osigwe assured.
