The National Assembly is considering a bill that would mandate the swearing-in of future Presidents-elect at its arcade, according to Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.
Bamidele made the disclosure on Tuesday in Abuja while speaking on activities marking this year’s Democracy Day.
He explained that the proposed legislation is aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s democratic institutions and aligning important national events with the country’s legislative centre.
In addition to the swearing-in proposal, Bamidele said the National Assembly is also working on a bill that would institutionalise the President’s annual State of the Nation Address to a joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives on June 12.
“It is our desire to institutionalise the State of the Nation Address. We will bring a bill to address it, to ensure that it is institutionalised. People should look forward to it,” he said.
“President Tinubu is working with the National Assembly in that regard. June 12 will be a better time for the President to address the nation through the National Assembly. There is no better day than June 12 for the President to address the nation, because of its historical significance,” he added.
President Bola Tinubu has been invited to address a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday as part of activities to mark the 2025 Democracy Day.
Democracy Day is commemorated annually on 12 June in honour of the late Chief MKO Abiola, widely regarded as the winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election, often described as the most credible in Nigeria’s history.
