A 20-year-old man, Lekan Nurudeen, has been sentenced to four months in prison for stealing a school bag, a three-kilogramme gas cylinder, and a solar lamp in the Bodija area of Ibadan.
The court convicted Nurudeen on charges of conspiracy, housebreaking, and stealing after he pleaded guilty.
Delivering judgment, the court’s President, Mrs O.E. Owoseni, stated that the sentence was based on the defendant’s admission of guilt and the evidence presented by the prosecution.
“Therefore, Nurudeen is sentenced to four months’ imprisonment for count one or an option of five months of community service; four months for count two or an option of five months of community service; and four months for count three or an option of five months of community service,” she ruled, adding that the sentences would run concurrently.
Owoseni advised the convict to stay away from crime upon completing his sentence, warning that “crime doesn’t pay.”
The prosecuting counsel, Insp. Ayodele Ayeni, told the court that Nurudeen committed the offence on 23 April in Bodija after conspiring with accomplices still at large to break into the residence of Mr James Ugwu.
Ayeni said the stolen items included a school bag worth ₦5,000, a 3kg gas cylinder worth ₦15,000, and a solar lamp valued at ₦5,000.
The offences, he added, contravened sections 516, 412 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 38 Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State 2000.
