Malawi’s newly-elected President, Peter Mutharika, has appointed Joseph Mwanamvekha as the country’s Minister of Finance.
Mwanamvekha, an economist and former banker, previously served in the same role during Mutharika’s first administration between 2016 and 2020.
His appointment comes as Malawi grapples with economic challenges, including foreign exchange shortages, rising living costs, fuel scarcity, debt distress, and a constrained business environment.
Mutharika, who was sworn in on Saturday following his victory in the presidential election, is yet to unveil a full cabinet.
He also named Enoch Chihana as Second Vice President and George Chaponda as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Mutharika is widely credited for reducing inflation during his previous tenure and improving public infrastructure, particularly roads.
