The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has advised residents of Edo State, especially those in low-lying communities, to relocate to higher grounds in response to looming flood threats.

This alert follows a forecast by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), which warns that heavy rainfall and flooding could persist until September or October.

State NSCDC Commandant Gbenga Agun, in a statement issued by spokesman Efosa Ogbebor, stressed the importance of taking action early.

“It is better to act now than wait until lives and property are lost,” Agun said, urging residents to adopt precautionary measures.

He noted that the frequency and intensity of rainfall in July was already concerning, making urgent sensitisation essential.

The NSCDC said it had mobilised its Disaster Management Unit and directed officers in flood-prone areas such as Agenebode, Udaba, Anegbete, Ukpeko, Illushi, and Oji to begin immediate awareness campaigns.

“These officers will educate residents on flood preparedness, safe evacuation, and how to minimise losses,” Agun added.

He also called on community leaders and local governments to partner in the sensitisation efforts, saying the corps was committed to working closely with traditional rulers and authorities.

Agun encouraged the public to stay alert, report early signs of flooding, and follow official safety instructions to reduce the impact of the seasonal disaster.
