Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda called French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal on Thursday to extend France’s nuclear “umbrella” to European allies an interesting idea.

“I think it is a very interesting idea, and we have high expectations of this proposal because the nuclear umbrella would serve as a very serious deterrent against Russia,” Nauseda said ahead of an EU summit in Brussels.

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina remarked that it was too early to make decisions regarding the deployment of French nuclear weapons in Latvia.

“We have not decided. There have been announcements from President Macron, and it needs time for our country to discuss and decide.

“It is something new, but we see it as an opportunity for dialogue. It is really too soon to provide concrete answers to this question,” she said.
