The Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) Caretaker Committee, Sen. Nenadi Usman, has welcomed the Supreme Court’s judgment removing the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, calling it a victory for the rule of law and a significant step for Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, Usman expressed satisfaction with the ruling, which upheld her appeal while dismissing the cross-appeal filed by Abure’s faction.
“This is not a time for triumphalism—there is no victor and no vanquished,” she stated.
“What matters most is our collective commitment to the ideals and aspirations of the Labour Party and the Nigerian people. We must now come together, united in purpose and vision, to move the party forward.”
Usman reaffirmed that the Labour Party remains a united family, dedicated to building a Nigeria based on justice, equity, and people-centered governance.
She urged party members, supporters, and stakeholders to remain calm, focused, and committed to the democratic principles that bind them together.
Correspondence reports that a five-member panel of the Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Friday that the Court of Appeal lacked jurisdiction to affirm Abure as the party’s chairman.
The apex court maintained that party leadership matters are internal affairs and subsequently upheld Usman’s appeal. She was appointed caretaker chairman of the party in September 2024.
