Dr Sambo Shehu, the Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, has advised operators of patent medicine stores against the indiscriminate sale of drugs.
Shehu gave the advice during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Dutse.
He said the move aims to discourage self-medication, which he described as dangerous.
“Self-medication is actually dangerous, and people should not take any medication without the advice of a qualified medical practitioner.
“It can worsen a patient’s condition and even lead to death. So, what we are calling for is that whatever symptoms you have, you should go to the nearest health facility and seek medical advice.
“Also, those patent medicine shops selling medications indiscriminately should fear God and stop such practices”.
He added that self-medication could contribute to drug resistance in micro-organisms that cause infections.
“The dangers of self-medication cannot be overstated,” he said.
The Executive Secretary further warned that no one should take any medication without a doctor’s advice and prescription.
“In other words, self-medication is unacceptable.
“Whenever you fall sick, visit the nearest hospital. It is the responsibility of medical personnel to diagnose your condition and determine the actual ailment affecting you.
“They are responsible for prescribing the appropriate medication, including the correct dosage,” he added.
