Seyi Jakande, Chairman-elect of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and son of the late First Civilian Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, has pledged to adopt and build upon his father’s people-centred governance style.
Jakande made this commitment on Wednesday in an interview with correspondence, shortly after receiving his Certificate of Return from the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) in Yaba.
LASIEC had earlier presented certificates to all 57 chairmen-elect and 376 councillors-elect who emerged from Saturday’s local government elections across Lagos State.
Asked whether he would follow in the footsteps of his late father, who governed Lagos State from 1979 to 1983, Jakande replied, “Absolutely yes. It is a continuity.”
He affirmed that the development agenda of the council would continue to focus on policies and programmes that promote public welfare, values that were central to the legacy of Alhaji Lateef Jakande.
“We are going to key into the vision of Alhaji Lateef Jakande, organising people-centric programmes and policies,” he said. “We will sustain those values and inject new innovations to move the council forward.”
Jakande, who had served as Vice Chairman of the council for the past eight years, reassured residents that his administration would consolidate past achievements and implement new initiatives in areas such as health, education, environment, empowerment, infrastructure, security, agriculture, tourism, and sports.
“We have always delivered on our campaign promises. This is a continuity of all the impactful programmes we have initiated over the last eight years,” he said.
Jakande also commended LASIEC for conducting a free, fair, and credible election, and expressed gratitude to constituents for their unwavering support.
In a related development, Mr. Babatunde Dosunmu, the lone councillor-elect on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) among the 376 seats, attributed his victory in Yaba Ward D (Abule-Oja) to his popularity and the trust the people placed in him.
“This mandate belongs to the people, and I promise not to disappoint them,” Dosunmu said.
