In the occupied West Bank, particularly in the Tulkarem and Nur Shams refugee camps, Israeli military actions have escalated, leading to widespread destruction and displacement. Under the operation termed “Iron Wall,” Israeli forces have employed bulldozers to demolish homes, set fires to properties, and utilize sniper fire to intimidate and control the remaining Palestinian residents. These aggressive tactics have forced many to seek refuge in nearby shelters or other villages.
The humanitarian impact is profound. Approximately 32,000 individuals have been displaced since the operation’s commencement in January. Despite numerous requests from Palestinian families to retrieve personal belongings from their homes, none have been approved, according to reports from the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees.
In one instance, a resident named Abdel and his family, who remain in their home, report being coerced into providing free labour for Israeli soldiers stationed nearby. They are compelled to perform tasks such as repairing utilities and delivering food, under the threat of further retaliation. This situation has left the family in a constant state of fear and uncertainty.
The ongoing military presence in these areas is expected to persist for an extended period, with Israeli forces declaring both camps as closed military zones. This designation restricts access and exacerbates the challenges faced by the Palestinian population, raising concerns about the long-term humanitarian implications of such actions.
