The Global Peace Foundation Nigeria (GPFN) has condemned the recent lynching of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State, calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident.
The Country Director of GPFN, Rev. John Hayab, expressed concern in a statement on Saturday in Kaduna, emphasizing the need to uphold the rule of law and promote peaceful coexistence.
“This disturbing incident highlights the urgent need to reinforce societal values, uphold the rule of law, and foster peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians,” Hayab said.
He reiterated GPFN’s commitment to unity and mutual respect, stressing that every Nigerian, regardless of background, deserves dignity and fairness.
“Acts of violence and jungle justice not only erode the moral fabric of our society but also hinder national progress and stability. We commend the swift response of security agencies in apprehending some alleged suspects linked to this incident,” he added.
Hayab urged the authorities to ensure a comprehensive investigation that guarantees justice in line with legal procedures.
“We also call on the government to urgently address the lingering insecurity that has turned every Nigerian into a suspect, fueling unnecessary fear and distrust among citizens,” he said.
According to him, the rising trend of mob justice is a consequence of the government’s failure to tackle insecurity effectively, which threatens social cohesion and legal order.
He called for security sector reforms, urging government agencies, civil society organizations, and community leaders to work together in restoring public confidence in the justice system.
GPFN also appealed to Nigerians to avoid taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
“Public awareness campaigns should be intensified to educate people on the dangers of mob justice and the importance of tolerance and understanding.
“This tragic event is a stark reminder of our collective responsibility to foster a culture of peace, justice, and respect for human dignity.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” Hayab stated.
