Abia State is currently playing host to a significant gathering of eye care professionals as the Nigerian Optometrists Association (NOA) holds its 48th Annual Conference and National Elections in Umuahia. In a warm reception at Government House, Governor Alex Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the lives of Abians through targeted investments in healthcare and overall welfare.

During the visit, Governor Otti emphasized that the true purpose of government is the welfare of its people. He stated that any administration that fails to meet the needs of its citizens must re-evaluate its priorities. According to him, healthcare and security are foundational to true welfare, noting that “if you are not healthy or secure, there is no welfare.

”Governor Otti highlighted some of the major strides his administration has made in the healthcare sector, particularly the establishment of the Abia State Eyecare Management Bureau. This unique bureau, which may be the only one of its kind in Nigeria, has already provided free eye screenings, treatments, and surgeries to thousands of residents across all 17 local government areas in the state.

He applauded the NOA for choosing Abia as the venue for its national event, describing the theme, “Optometry in a Changing World,” as timely and relevant. Governor Otti also pledged his support for a legislative bill that seeks to decentralize the National Vision Centre and promised to follow up on the matter at the National Assembly. He encouraged the delegates to explore the state—especially Aba, the commercial hub of the South-East—to witness firsthand the transformation underway.President of the Nigerian Optometrists Association, Dr. Chimezirim Anderson, thanked Governor Otti for his visionary leadership and for appointing optometrists to key positions, such as the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Maureen Aghukwa, and the Administrator of the Eyecare Bureau, Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi. He praised the Governor for the positive developments in Abia and disclosed that Abia has the highest number of vision centres in the country. He also requested a parcel of land for the association to establish a regional office in the state.

In her vote of thanks, Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi expressed appreciation for the enabling environment created by the Otti-led administration. She noted that the presence of over a thousand optometrists for the conference has stimulated the local economy, with all hotels in Umuahia fully booked.

The meeting, which also had other top government officials in attendance, further reinforced the commitment of the Abia State Government to promoting quality healthcare and building meaningful partnerships for a better future.

Abia is rising—and with Governor Otti’s people-first approach, the future looks even brighter.
