The Global Peace Index 2025 has revealed a sharp decline in worldwide peacefulness as armed conflicts and political instability continue to grow. The report released by the Institute for Economics and Peace shows that global peace levels are now at their lowest point in decades.
Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world for another year thanks to its political stability, low crime rate, and minimal involvement in global military conflicts. Other nations that rank high include Ireland, New Zealand, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Singapore, Portugal, Denmark, and Slovenia. These destinations also stand out as some of the safest countries for international travel in 2025.
On the other end of the index, countries facing severe violence and instability include Russia, Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Yemen. The report highlights that 87 countries recorded declines in peace while only 74 showed improvement. Analysts describe this trend as the greatest retreat in global peacefulness since the Second World War.
