Maj.-Gen. Koko Isoni, Commander of the Army Headquarters Garrison, has stressed the importance of equipping soldiers with essential skills to survive and defeat enemies on the battlefield.

Isoni, represented by Brig.-Gen. Suleman Tilawan, the Garrison’s Chief of Staff, made the statement during the opening of the 2025 Corporals and Below Competition in Abuja on Monday. The competition includes events such as combat swimming, obstacle crossing, weapon handling, map reading, compass navigation, and drills, all aimed at enhancing the soldiers’ professional competence and combat proficiency.

“The essence of training is for you to operate in the field,” Isoni emphasized, urging soldiers to prioritize practical training over theoretical knowledge. He pointed out the need for soldiers to be fully prepared to face real-world challenges, particularly in combat scenarios.

“We are not interested in going back to theory; we want people who will bring their experiences from what you are going to face out there,” he added. He expressed concern about the increasing threat from militia groups, stressing that soldiers must possess the skills and determination to defeat such enemies.

“Their only advantage is that they carry rifles and have the will to attack. You will carry rifles, carry weapons, and still run away! We are here to ensure that you get the skills you need to survive, to defeat enemies,” Isoni said, emphasizing that failure to acquire these skills would render the training futile.

Brig.-Gen. Ndareke Orok, the Garrison Training Officer, highlighted that the competition was designed to demonstrate the soldiers’ dedication, resilience, and professionalism. He explained that the event would test their physical abilities, foster teamwork, improve tactical capabilities, and reinforce army values.

Orok thanked the commander for providing the necessary resources and facilities, despite competing demands, and acknowledged the support of the Guards Brigades in hosting the competition.

“As we progress with today’s event, let us remain focused, respectful, and determined. May this competition serve as another stepping stone towards building a stronger and more united Nigerian Army,” Orok said.
