The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Miss Ruth Otabor, who was involved in a crash on Aug. 11 near the Sports Complex of Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State.
The Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, in a condolence message on Monday in Abuja, commiserated with the deceased’s family, the Students Union, and the entire Auchi Polytechnic community.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the crash, which occurred at about 10:30 a.m., involved a Dangote truck and a commercial motorcycle.
Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija star Phyna and a recent graduate, sustained severe injuries that led to the amputation of one of her limbs before her eventual death.
Mohammed prayed for the repose of her soul, describing the incident as “most regrettable,” despite FRSC’s ongoing efforts to ensure safer roads nationwide.
He recalled that immediately after the crash, the Corps convened a meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to address their concerns and provide updates on FRSC’s safety interventions.
According to him, the Corps has also intensified collaboration with major fleet operators, including Dangote and BUA, through structured training and recertification programmes for their drivers.
“The Corps remains committed to strengthening enforcement, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement as part of measures to avert such tragedies in the future,” he said.
The FRSC boss noted that the incident served as a sober reminder of the need for collective responsibility in road safety management.
“Once again, the FRSC extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pledges continued dedication to its mandate of safeguarding lives on Nigerian roads,” he added.
