Fresh explosions rocked the Port of Hamburg early Wednesday, just hours after firefighters declared a massive blaze under control following more than 40 hours of burning.
The blasts, reported around 4 a.m. (0200 GMT), ignited two containers which were quickly extinguished from a safe distance with water cannons. No injuries were recorded.
A spokesman for the Hamburg Fire Brigade said water curtains were deployed to prevent the flames from spreading. About 30 firefighters remained at the scene Wednesday morning, uncovering embers and opening containers to fully quench the fire.
Authorities noted that investigations into the cause of the blaze will only begin once all hotspots are extinguished, with recovery work expected to continue throughout the day.
The original fire, which broke out Monday afternoon in the Veddel district southeast of Hamburg’s city centre, left six people injured. Police confirmed that a woman who was initially in critical condition is now stable.
