The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State Chapter, is calling for immediate advocacy to combat violence against women and girls, coinciding with this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

FIDA Chairperson, Adata-Bio Briggs, emphasized that there can be no justification for any form of violence against women. She highlighted the urgent need for societal change and stronger legal protections to ensure the safety and well-being of women and girls.

Briggs urged the state government, stakeholders, and non-governmental organizations to join efforts in fighting gender-based violence, advocating for a society where women and girls can move freely and without fear.

In related comments, Dr. Hilda Desmond, Chairperson of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ahaoda Branch, spoke to our correspondent about the ongoing 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence. She reiterated that as lawyers, they are uniquely positioned to champion the rights of women and promote justice for victims.

Dr. Desmond stated, “We have a responsibility to use our knowledge and resources to defend the vulnerable and ensure that their voices are heard.”
