The Federal Government has appealed to the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) to suspend its planned nationwide strike.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr Muhammad Dingyadi, made the appeal on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with the association’s leadership.

Nurses across Nigeria, under the umbrella of NANNM, had declared a seven-day warning strike set to commence Wednesday night, citing poor welfare and other unresolved issues.

Their demands include improved working conditions, enhanced welfare packages, better recognition, adequate staffing, sufficient resources, and fair remuneration.

Dingyadi urged the association to reconsider its decision, stating that industrial action was not the most effective means of resolving disputes.

“Strike is not the best solution to industrial disputes,” he said, calling on the nurses to prioritise dialogue while the government works toward meeting their demands.

The meeting is scheduled to continue on Friday at the Federal Ministry of Health as efforts intensify to find a resolution.
