The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to aligning Nigeria’s development priorities with international best practices for sustainable ocean governance.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by his Special Adviser, Dr Bolaji Akinola.

Oyetola emphasised the vital role oceans play in Nigeria’s national economy and environmental resilience, citing their significance in maritime trade, transportation, food security and climate action.

“We are committed to aligning Nigeria’s development agenda with global best practices for sustainable ocean governance,” he said. “President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability and economic diversification.”

The minister disclosed that he would represent President Bola Tinubu at the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), scheduled to hold from June 9 to 13 in Nice, France.

Describing the event as a timely platform to mobilise global momentum for ocean conservation and sustainable marine resource use, he noted that it would convene world leaders, scientists, and industry stakeholders.

Oyetola also highlighted Nigeria’s observance of World Oceans Day on June 8 as further proof of the country’s commitment to international cooperation in addressing challenges facing marine and coastal ecosystems.

“Our presence at UNOC3 is a clear demonstration of this administration’s resolve to protect our marine ecosystems while unlocking the immense potential of the blue economy for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he stated.

He said Nigeria’s delegation would engage in high-level dialogues, expert sessions, and bilateral meetings to foster global partnerships and attract investments in sustainable marine infrastructure, ocean science, and coastal resilience.

“We are also expected to showcase Nigeria’s recent reforms in marine protection, port modernisation, and artisanal fisheries development,” Oyetola added.

He maintained that Nigeria’s active involvement at UNOC3 underlines its strategic position as a regional leader in marine governance, innovation, and sustainable coastal development.
