The European Commission has appealed to both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and take immediate steps towards de-escalation amid ongoing hostilities between the two countries.
Correspondent reports that Anouar El Anouni, spokesperson for foreign affairs at the European Commission, made the remarks during a briefing on Wednesday.
“We urge both sides to show restraint and take immediate steps towards de-escalation,” he said. “The EU recalls the need for a negotiated, mutually agreed and lasting peaceful solution to the conflict.”
El Anouni added that the matter would be discussed further by EU foreign ministers at the upcoming Gymnich meeting.
Earlier on Wednesday, India’s Defence Ministry announced the commencement of Operation Sindoor, which it said targeted “terrorist infrastructure” within Pakistan. The ministry claimed 70 terrorists were neutralised, emphasising that no Pakistani military sites were hit.
In response, Pakistan’s military reported that 26 people were killed and 46 injured as a result of the strikes. Meanwhile, Pakistani media stated that the country’s air force had downed five Indian fighter jets.
