Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, has pledged firm support for grassroots sports development under the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Idahosa made this commitment while receiving Super Eagles and Fenerbahçe FC defender, Bright Osayi-Samuel, who was in Benin to attend the final of his annual Under-13 football tournament.
The pledge was revealed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Mr Friday Aghedo, Chief Press Secretary to the deputy governor.
Idahosa described sports as a powerful instrument for youth empowerment, job creation, and social cohesion, adding that the state government was determined to revitalise sports across Edo’s 18 local government areas.
“This administration sees sports not just as a competitive activity but as a thriving economic sector capable of lifting families out of poverty. We are investing in sports development to curb youth restiveness, create jobs, and build strong community bonds,” he said.
He lauded Osayi-Samuel’s dedication to grassroots football and assured him of the state’s continued support for his annual U-13 tournament, which he described as a model for talent discovery and youth development.
In response, Osayi-Samuel called for greater investment in grassroots football across the country, noting the abundance of untapped talent waiting for the right platform.
“There are many talented young players, but they don’t have the opportunity and exposure. Everyone has a story, and these young boys deserve to be seen. My tournament is one way to give them a platform,” he said.
The Super Eagles defender reaffirmed his commitment to expanding his football initiative and urged other sports stakeholders to join in efforts to support local talent and give back to the community.
