Anticipation is building ahead of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super 6, as six elite teams gear up to battle for the coveted title in Ikenne, Ogun State.
Since the introduction of the playoff format in 2021, the league has produced four different champions, reflecting a fiercely competitive domestic scene. This season, past champions Edo Queens, Bayelsa Queens, and Rivers Angels are joined by former winners Nasarawa Amazons and debutant contenders Remo Stars Ladies and Naija Ratels.
Defending champions Edo Queens enter the tournament as favourites. Having secured their maiden title in 2024, the Benin-based side, led by Coach Moses Aduku, boasts a squad built on tactical discipline and governmental support. They topped Group A with 35 points from 11 wins, two draws, and one loss. Their continental success, including a WAFU-B title and a CAF Women’s Champions League semi-final run, has cemented their status as a dominant force.
Remo Stars Ladies, on the other hand, are the tournament’s surprise package. In just their second top-flight campaign, the privately owned side from Ikenne finished second in Group A with 30 points. Coached by former Super Falcons assistant Wemimo Mathew, they are poised to make history as potential first-time champions, with home advantage and a strong squad including Bolaji Olamide, Kafayat Bashiru, and Innocent Patricia.
Nasarawa Amazons, two-time champions (2013 and 2017), continue to be a formidable presence. Under U20 national coach Christopher Danjuma, they finished third in Group A with 28 points and are still in the hunt for the President Federation Cup. Their lineup features talents like Olushola Shobowale, Janet Akekoromowei, and Sikiratu Isah.
In Group B, Bayelsa Queens remain unbeaten through the regular season, collecting 34 points from 10 wins and four draws. The five-time champions, managed by Whyte Ogonda, combine experience with youth and are strong favourites to reclaim the crown they last held in 2022. Key players include Mercy Okonkwo, Jennifer Oliver, and Delight Isaac.
Rivers Angels, Nigeria’s most decorated women’s team with seven titles, return with determination after narrowly missing out last year. Finishing second in Group B with 32 points, the Port Harcourt giants are led by Coach Tosan Blankson and feature experienced names such as Mary Moses, Taiwo Afolabi, and Sandra John.
Naija Ratels, representing the FCT, complete the lineup as potential spoilers. After clinching a playoff berth on the final day, the side is hoping to better their 2022 Super 6 outing. With players like Bankole Sofiat and Oluwatumininu Adeshina, they could upset the favourites.
The Super 6 will run from May 10 to May 17 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. (NAN)
