Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) and SP Offshore Nigeria Limited have signed a strategic partnership agreement to produce ammunition, weapons, and security equipment.

Director General of DICON, Maj.-Gen. Babatunde Alaya, described the agreement, signed on Thursday in Kaduna, as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s quest for self-sufficiency in defence production.

According to Alaya, the joint venture will focus on establishing an ammunition production line, with output expected to begin within a year, followed by the production of weapons and other military assets.

He revealed that the partnership also includes plans to set up a jetty in Lagos for manufacturing fast assault boats and border security equipment.

Alaya noted that foreign investors backing the venture were bringing in billions of dollars to support the initiative.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for signing the DICON Act 2023, which provided the legal framework for the collaboration. He also expressed appreciation to the Minister of Defence, Minister of State for Defence, Chief of Defence Staff, and Service Chiefs for their support.

According to him, the venture is designed to meet the defence needs of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies, while also creating capacity for export.

“This collaboration is seen as a win-win for all parties involved, driving growth and development in Nigeria’s defence industry,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Chief Executive Officer of SP Offshore Nigeria Limited, Obafemi Adekunle, said future warfare will rely more on technology than on traditional arms.

He emphasised the need for technological advancement and deterrence capabilities as crucial elements in ensuring national security.

“The partnership is to provide security agencies with capabilities that deter enemies and promote national stability,” he said.

Adekunle also thanked various individuals and institutions that contributed to the success of the agreement.

He praised Alaya’s leadership and expressed optimism about future collaborations, saying his company is committed to forging new paths with partners and delivering meaningful contributions to national defence.
