Denmark has summoned the top United States diplomat in Copenhagen after reports surfaced that individuals linked to former President Donald Trump were involved in attempts to influence politics in Greenland. According to Danish intelligence and local broadcaster DR, at least three Americans allegedly sought to weaken ties between Greenland and Denmark by encouraging pro U.S. voices, stirring local divisions, and spreading negative narratives about Danish control of the Arctic territory.

Greenland, a semi autonomous territory of Denmark, holds vast natural resources and major strategic importance in the Arctic. Trump has previously expressed open interest in acquiring the island, even joking about the possibility of buying it. The new claims suggest that efforts tied to his circle went beyond rhetoric and involved covert political outreach.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen called the actions unacceptable and stressed that Denmark will not tolerate interference in its internal affairs. He instructed officials to meet with U.S. chargé d’affaires Mark Stroh, who is acting as the senior diplomat since Washington has not appointed a full ambassador.

The Danish Security and Intelligence Service confirmed that foreign actors have targeted Greenland, warning that attempts to exploit or fabricate political divisions threaten both Danish sovereignty and Greenlandic self governance. Lawmakers in Greenland also voiced outrage, with parliament member Aaja Chemnitz condemning the interference and reaffirming that decisions about the island’s future rest with its people.

This diplomatic clash comes just months after Denmark protested alleged U.S. surveillance of Greenland’s independence movement. The latest revelations add to tensions between Copenhagen and Washington at a time when Arctic geopolitics is gaining global attention.
