Cleveland Guardians’ designated hitter David Fry was hospitalized after being struck in the face by a 99 mph fastball from Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal. The incident occurred in the sixth inning of the Guardians’ 5-2 victory over the Tigers on Tuesday night.

Fry attempted to bunt the pitch but missed, resulting in the ball hitting him squarely in the face. He collapsed in the batter’s box, clutching his face, prompting immediate attention from team trainers and medical staff. Fry remained conscious throughout the ordeal and was transported from Lutheran Medical Center to the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus for further testing and observation.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt expressed concern, stating, “We’re all thinking about David and his family right now. Obviously, we’re glad he’s okay, but it’s a really scary moment.” Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal, visibly shaken by the incident, added, “It’s really tough. I’ve already reached out to him. I just want to make sure he’s alright.”

The Guardians’ victory in this game was significant, as it allowed them to catch up with the Tigers atop the AL Central division after trailing by as much as 15½ games earlier in the season.

As of now, Fry’s condition is being closely monitored, and the team has not provided an official update on his status.
