The Cross River House of Assembly has extended the suspension of the Bekwarra Local Government Chairman, Ms Theresa Ushie, for another 90 days.

Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Elvert Ayambem, announced the decision during plenary on Wednesday.

Ushie was first suspended on June 10 for three months over allegations of corruption, misconduct and abuse of power, following a petition submitted by eight members of the Bekwarra Legislative Council, who had also attempted to impeach her.

Ayambem said the extension was necessary to give the House Committee on Judiciary, Public Service Matters, Public Petitions and Conflict Resolution more time to investigate the petition.

Before approving the extension, lawmakers had debated a motion on prolonging the tenure of the Acting Chairman of the council, Mr Egbung Obama.

Chairman of the Investigative Committee, Mr Davies Etta, representing Abi State Constituency, explained that additional time was needed to conduct a thorough inquiry.

Ushie was elected chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council and sworn in in November 2024.
