A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi has ordered the remand of a 42-year-old school proprietor, Nabem Bam, at the Makurdi Correctional Centre for allegedly cheating students of ₦17 million.

The defendant, who resides opposite Mase Central Market, Makurdi-Aliade Road, Benue State, is facing charges of cheating and criminal misappropriation.

Chief Magistrate Kelvin Mbanongun declined to take the defendant’s plea due to lack of jurisdiction and adjourned the matter until 28 August for further mention.

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Jonah Uletu, the defendant was apprehended by the Benue State Civil Protection Guards on 20 June and subsequently handed over to the police.

Uletu informed the court that Bam allegedly collected ₦17 million from 37 students of Makurdi College of Health and Medical Laboratory Science, Adaka, claiming it was for registration in the 2025 National Community Health and Extension Workers examination.

Instead of fulfilling the registration, the defendant allegedly diverted the funds for personal use.

The offences, the prosecutor said, contravene Sections 324 and 310 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue, 2004.
