An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court on Monday ordered the remand of two suspected cult members for alleged unlawful possession of dangerous weapons and malicious damage.
The defendants, Adefolaju Segun, 26, and Awowole Seyi, 20, were charged with breach of peace, cultism and destruction of property.
Prosecutor ASP Emmanuel Abdullahi told the court that the offences were committed on Aug. 20 at Odowara Ilode area, Ile-Ife, where the defendants allegedly paraded themselves as cultists while armed. He alleged they damaged windscreens and glasses of four cars and two shop doors belonging to residents.
Abdullahi said the offences contravened Sections 70, 451 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.
The defendants pleaded not guilty. Defence counsel Samuel Obi applied for bail in liberal terms, but Magistrate Abosede Sarumi directed that the application be made in writing.
She ordered their remand at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ile-Ife, pending the bail application, and adjourned the case until Oct. 2 for hearing.
