A Grade ‘A’ Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, has ordered the remand of two brothers, Usman Wasiu, 20, and Toheeb Wasiu, 26, in a correctional facility for allegedly insulting a police officer.

The brothers pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and breach of peace.

Court President, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, granted each of the defendants bail in the sum of N200,000, with two reliable sureties in like sum. She directed that the sureties must present evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Oyo State government and possess valid identity cards.

The case was adjourned until 2 July for hearing.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Ayodele Ayeni, told the court that the alleged offence occurred around 12:30 a.m. on 13 May at the entrance of Mapo police station.

Ayeni explained that the siblings cursed and shouted abusive words at Insp Taiwo Ige and two other officers, with the intention of inciting the public against the police and thereby disturbing public peace.

The alleged offences contravene Sections 516 and 249 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
