The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has commenced the process of amending the Engineers (Registration, etc.) Act (as amended) 2018 to strengthen engineering regulation in the country.

The COREN President, Prof. Sadiq Abubakar, disclosed this in a statement signed by the Registrar, Prof. Okorie Uche, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Abubakar said a committee had been inaugurated to drive the process, describing the review as critical to aligning engineering practice in Nigeria with global best standards.

“The review of the Act is necessary to strengthen engineering regulation and ensure the profession remains responsive to emerging national and international realities,” he said.

The committee, chaired by Kamila Maliki, comprises seasoned engineering practitioners, legal experts, and key stakeholders in the engineering sector. Other members include Ejikeme U. Mgbemena (Deputy Chairman), Mrs. Margaret Oguntala, Andrew Onyilo (Secretary), Precious Arowolo (Assistant Secretary), Dominic Udoatan, Isyaka Kam-selem, Alhaji Bukar, Umar Maikunkele, Cyril Onyeneke, Prof. Okorie Uche, Dr. A. Amin, and Folorunsho Oladoyin.

Abubakar said the committee’s Terms of Reference (ToR) mandated it to review the Engineers Act 2018 to identify strengths and gaps, engage stakeholders across engineering and allied sectors, benchmark findings against global best practices, and recommend amendments to enhance COREN’s regulatory powers.

He added that the committee would also propose measures to improve disciplinary frameworks, strengthen institutional autonomy, and provide sustainable support for key initiatives such as the Engineering Residency Programme (ERP).

The committee is expected to submit its final report within three months.

“COREN remains committed to safeguarding the practice of engineering in Nigeria by ensuring its regulatory instruments are robust, forward-looking, and globally competitive,” Abubakar said.
