The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has introduced a new register to formally recognise and regulate building technologists, technicians, and craftsmen across the construction industry.
The announcement was made during a news conference in Abuja by CORBON Chairman, Dr Samson Opaluwah, who said the move was designed to enhance professional growth, ensure quality control, and support career development for non-builder cadres in the sector.
Opaluwah explained that although over 4,000 builders had been registered since CORBON was established under Decree 45 of 1989, other critical personnel on construction sites had previously operated without formal recognition.
“These building technicians and artisans form the bulk of private sector practitioners. Unfortunately, they’ve lacked proper recognition and opportunities for growth. That’s about to change,” he said.
According to him, the new register was approved at the last council meeting and is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. It introduces a structure for certifying and regulating all site-based practitioners.
He stated that CORBON would now adopt the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) in its registration process. The NSQF, approved by the Federal Executive Council in 2013, provides a standard for certifying informal sector skills and qualifications.
“This new system accommodates professionals from both the formal and informal sectors. If you have the skill and competence, we will register you and provide a path for advancement,” Opaluwah said.
He noted that the framework would help employers with clearer benchmarks for recruitment and training, while enhancing oversight capacity for regulatory agencies.
Governments, he said, would benefit from improved data on skill availability, while the public would enjoy safer and more professional housing delivery services.
A public call for registration applications will be announced soon. Opaluwah urged all building technologists, technicians, and craftsmen to take advantage of the new opportunity to formalise their roles in the sector.
