The Holy Family Society of the Catholic Church has called on the Federal Government to introduce and implement robust policies focused on youth development, urging it to complement the efforts of private individuals working to uplift underprivileged children.

Dr. Patrick Pillah, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Administration, Veritas University, Abuja, made the call on Tuesday during a Children’s Day celebration held in the Pyakasa-Kabusa-Ketti communities of Abuja. The event was organized by renowned philanthropist Sir David Osunde in celebration of his 78th birthday.

Pillah said that beyond the festivities, the occasion symbolized a message of hope and value for the children in these underserved communities.

“For years, Osunde has made it his mission to gather children from underprivileged backgrounds and give them the joy and celebration that every child deserves. If all Nigerians did what he is doing, we would be sleeping with our eyes closed,” Pillah said.

He emphasized the importance of community care and compassion, describing the event as a practical demonstration of love, generosity, and social responsibility.

“Today, the children are happy. Look at the number of schools that attended. The celebrant has provided them a platform to relax, recreate, eat, and enjoy. A joyful childhood lays the foundation for a hopeful future,” he added.

Despite being absent physically, Osunde’s presence was felt throughout the event. In a goodwill message read on his behalf, he thanked God for the gift of life and for allowing him to mark his 78th birthday in the company of children from his community.

Quoting Proverbs 22:6, Osunde highlighted the importance of nurturing children with love, wisdom, and godly principles.

“Our children are keen observers. They learn more from our actions than from our words. We must strive to be shining examples of diligence, truthfulness, honesty, and respect,” he said.

Osunde also advised children to embrace hard work, make wise friendship choices, and always uphold honesty and integrity.

Another speaker, Jovita Nzeduru of Jesus the Redeemer Parish and a co-organizer of the event, described children as the future of any nation.

“To build a morally upright society, children must be guided with the right values from an early age. This annual celebration, which started on a small scale 15 years ago, has impacted countless lives,” Nzeduru said.

She noted that this year’s celebration placed the spotlight squarely on the children, with adults only playing supportive roles.

The event featured a variety of activities including a march-past parade, cultural dances, a creative arts exhibition, talent workshops, interactive games, and more.

Many of the children expressed joy, sharing prayers and words of appreciation for the celebrant. They said the event made them feel recognized, seen, and loved.
