Veteran entertainer and social activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as CharlyBoy, is preparing to launch his memoir titled 999, a bold and reflective account of his unconventional life.
The announcement was made via his Instagram page, where he described 999 as more than a biography—calling it a “battleground” of truth.
“Google defines the figure ‘999’ as an angelic number and a dawn of new beginnings. It’s a red alert that you’re about to read the unapologetic truth about the self-styled President of all Frustrated Nigerians,” he wrote.
He added that the memoir contains personal battles, rebellious choices, spiritual encounters, and raw reflections that challenge societal expectations. According to him, he married four times before the age of 36, rejected conformity, and fearlessly carved out his own path.
“For over 40 years, he used the CharlyBoy brand to challenge Nigeria’s hypocrisy. To provoke, awaken, and give voice to the silenced. Was he controversial? Yes. Rebellious? Certainly. But also relentlessly real,” the post read.
Now in his seventies, CharlyBoy also revealed that the book discusses his recent health struggles, including a battle with prostate disease and erectile dysfunction. These revelations, he said, are part of his broader advocacy for men’s health and emotional wellness.
“From national fame to private pain… nothing in the book, ‘999’, is off-limits. Because in sharing his struggle, he hopes to give others permission to heal,” he stated.
He described 999 as “not just a memoir. It’s a challenge. A confession. A revolution. And above all, Charles Emeka Oputa’s truth.”
Born on 19 June 1950, CharlyBoy is the son of the late Supreme Court Justice Chukwudifu Oputa. Known for his eccentric style and bold opinions, he rose to prominence as a singer, television presenter, actor, and producer.
He hosted The Charly Boy Show, was a judge on Nigerian Idol in 2011, and served as president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN). He has been married for over four decades to African-American singer and former fashion designer Diane, with whom he shares children, alongside others from previous relationships.
