In a colourful display of tradition and appreciation, the University of Port Harcourt has honoured its host communities in a vibrant cultural festival marking the institution’s 50th anniversary. The event, held as part of UniPort@50 celebrations, showcased the rich heritage of the University’s surrounding communities and departments through music, dance, traditional attire, and cultural performances.

Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, applauded the host communities for their generous gesture of donating land to the Federal Government in 1975 for the establishment of the University. He emphasized that culture remains a vital expression of identity, unity, and continuity, and praised the communities for standing by the institution through five decades of growth and development.

Also present at the event was the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Distinguished Senator Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwa, who expressed profound gratitude to the host communities. He described their contribution as an invaluable act of trust and partnership that laid the foundation for the University’s academic excellence and infrastructural progress.

The cultural festival, which featured traditional masquerades, dances, and community participation, served not only as a tribute to the past but also as a reaffirmation of the University’s commitment to inclusiveness, mutual respect, and continuous engagement with its stakeholders.

As UniPort continues to forge ahead in its mission of academic distinction, the bond between the University and its host communities stands stronger than ever-anchored in history, strengthened by culture, and driven by a shared vision for future advancement.
