The Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to resume an industrial action over unresolved issues with the state government.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by Dr. Peter Adamu, Chairman of the ASUU KASU branch, and made available to journalists on Thursday in Kaduna.

Starreporters gathered that ASUU KASU had previously embarked on an indefinite strike on February 18, 2025, but suspended the action six days later following initial dialogue.

Dr. Adamu, however, alleged that the state government had cancelled two previously scheduled meetings with the union, raising concerns over its sincerity and commitment to resolving the impasse.

He outlined the union’s unresolved demands to include withheld salaries for May to September 2022, unpaid Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) supervision allowances, earned academic allowance, promotion arrears, and pension remittances.

Other grievances include the non-payment of group life assurance/death benefits, the wage award, consequential adjustment of salaries, and the implementation of financial autonomy for the institution.

“The government has returned to default settings, and this leaves us with no choice but to reconsider industrial action,” Adamu said.

He added that while ASUU had shown flexibility in negotiations, the government’s continued lack of commitment was eroding mutual trust and jeopardising academic stability at the university.

The union chairman appealed to the governor and other relevant stakeholders to swiftly intervene and prevent another strike that could severely affect the institution’s already fragile academic calendar.

“We urge the government to address these grievances promptly to avert a crisis that could plunge the university into further chaos,” he said.
