The inaugural edition of the African School Games, organised by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), has officially kicked off in Annaba, Algeria.

According to a statement released Friday by Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), the event will run from July 25 to August 5, and aims to provide a platform for identifying and nurturing young sports talents across Africa.

Nezianya described the Games as a springboard to prepare young athletes for international competitions like the Olympics, especially as the continent looks forward to hosting the Youth Olympic Games.

Competitions will take place across four venues, featuring at least 20 sporting events. In a bid to encourage widespread participation, Algeria has granted free accommodation and visa waivers to athletes from all 54 African countries.

Nezianya said this gesture may also reflect support for ANOCA President, Mustapha Berraf, an Algerian national.

Nigeria is participating with a contingent of 68 athletes competing in 10 sports: Athletics, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, Canoeing, Football, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cycling, Swimming, and Badminton.

Amaka Ashiofu, Nigeria’s Leader of Delegation from the National Sports Commission, stated that all athletes submitted school attestation letters and report cards to verify their student status. They also underwent a 12-day training camp ahead of the Games.

Secretary General of the NOC, Tunde Poopola, expressed optimism about the team’s performance, noting the athletes’ eagerness and potential.

Coaches also shared their expectations. Fortune Olayiwola (Canoeing) emphasised the importance of motivation, while Taekwondo Coach Victor Nwangwu noted that many athletes had prior experience from local and some international competitions.

Beach Volleyball Coach Yakubu Musa Argungu said, despite limited resources, the team had shown impressive form and hoped to leave a lasting impact. “It’s the same sandy surface, only the weather is different,” he added.

Although the competitions are underway, a grand opening ceremony is planned, with Nigeria’s National Sports Commission Chairman, Malam Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Bukola Olopade, expected to attend.
