The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects alleged to be members of a cult and kidnapping gang terrorising residents in the Nnewi area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Awka, affirming the command’s ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and create a secure environment conducive for businesses and livelihoods.
According to Ikenga, the arrests followed a police operation at a criminal hideout in Otolo-Nnewi, where officers apprehended two male suspects—21-year-old Ani Obinna and 43-year-old Okwudili Ezike—after a hot pursuit based on credible intelligence.
“The operatives recovered one foreign-made pistol, three live rounds of ammunition, and a motorcycle suspected to have been stolen,” he stated.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to being members of a secret cult and a kidnapping syndicate, and have provided useful information to aid further investigations.
Ikenga added that efforts are underway to dismantle the rest of the criminal network and apprehend other fleeing members.
“The command has intensified patrols in the area and remains committed to fostering a secure environment where residents and businesses can thrive,” he said.
