The Anambra State Government, in collaboration with the Carter Centre, has successfully provided free Hydrocelectomy surgery for 165 patients across the state.
Hydrocelectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a hydrocele—a fluid-filled sac in the scrotum—which can cause pain, discomfort, or interfere with daily activities.
The surgeries, which began on March 18, were conducted at three General Hospitals: Enugwu-Ukwu, Umueri, and Ekwulobia.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, stated on Saturday that the initiative was aimed at supporting patients, especially those in remote areas, by addressing hydrocele, a condition that can impact quality of life and self-confidence.
Obidike confirmed that no complications were recorded during the surgeries and praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the Carter Centre for their role in making the life-changing procedure accessible.
“This initiative highlights the expertise of healthcare workers in Anambra and underscores the administration’s commitment to improving the health sector and tackling pressing medical issues,” he said.
Dr. Chinenye Obi, Chief Medical Officer at Umueri General Hospital, noted that the facility was well-equipped for the procedures and had not recorded any casualties.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Somadina Nzegwu from Umuoba-Anam in Anambra East Local Government Area, expressed gratitude to the state government and the Carter Centre for providing free surgery.
“I spent over N380,000 on a similar procedure three years ago, but it reoccurred. I’m incredibly grateful to the government for coming to my aid, as I cannot afford the surgery this time. We thank Gov. Soludo and the Carter Centre for offering the free surgeries and extend our prayers for their continued success,” he said.
