Secondary school principals and teachers in Anambra State have been directed to confiscate mobile phones brought to school by students to curb distractions and improve academic performance.

Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu, Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, issued the directive during the Anambra Schools’ Cultural Day celebration on Friday in Awka.

She emphasized the need for discipline and focus in learning environments, stating that excessive phone use had become a major distraction.

“I am authorizing principals and teachers to seize phones from students who bring them to school, ensuring they concentrate on their academic work without interference,” Ikediugwu said.

She added that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration was making significant investments in education to promote academic excellence and instill discipline among students.

Speaking on the cultural event, Ikediugwu called for the preservation of Igbo heritage through education, stressing that Igbo culture extends beyond clothing and dance to values such as honesty, hard work, and respect for elders.

The event featured traditional music, dance, and cuisines, highlighting the richness of Igbo culture among students.
