The Aba-Port Harcourt rail line has been rehabilitated and is now fully operational, according to the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).
Public Relations Officer of the NRC in Aba, Mr Israel Uwalekwu, confirmed the development on Monday during an interview, stating that the Federal Government had completed refurbishment of the route to improve railway transport in the region.
He explained that operations were previously suspended to enable rehabilitation work by the Federal Ministry of Works, aimed at easing the transportation challenges faced by commuters.
“Now the rail line has been rehabilitated and activities have resumed, and people are now travelling daily by rail to Port Harcourt,” he said.
Uwalekwu also noted that the corporation had implemented security measures along the narrow-gauge corridor, describing the current safety level as “superb.” He acknowledged there had been past cases of vandalism along the Ogwe–Imo River–Elelenwo axis, but assured that no incidents of kidnapping had occurred.
“The train shuttles with armed police escorts,” he added.
