A Benin High Court on Thursday sentenced a 25-year-old man, Christopher Alex, to two years’ imprisonment for Internet fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had, in a plea bargain agreement, charged Alex with internet fraud, to which he pleaded guilty.

Justice Williams Aziegbemhin, found Alex guilty as charged and convicted him.

While sentencing the convict, the judge sentenced him with an option of N200,000 fine.

Aziegbemhin also ordered that the convict should forfeit his iPhone 12 Pro Max as an instrument of the crime with which he was charged and convicted.

The judge said he should also forfeit to the Federal Government undisclosed assets and properties subsequently traced to him as proceeds of the crime.

He ordered that Alex should also write an undertaking to be of good conduct.

The EFCC Prosecutor, Mr Sallau Balla-Ribah, had told the court that Alex committed the crime on Feb. 27 in Benin.

Balla-Ribah said the offence contravened sections 6 and 8 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006.

He said that the offence also contravened Section 1 (3) of the same Act.

The prosecutor said that in the plea bargain agreement, Alex accepted to forfeit the cell phone, assets and properties subsequently traced to him as proceeds of the crime to the Federal Government.
