As part of efforts to strengthen human capacity development, the Bursary Department of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has introduced an annual lecture series aimed at updating staff knowledge on emerging trends in accounting.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, acknowledged the significance of this initiative while speaking at the maiden edition of the lecture series.

“We participated in the maiden edition of the annual lecture series of the Bursary Department. Seasoned resource persons who are practising chartered accountants are on ground to take the bursary staff through this program of updating knowledge and new trends in the accounting space for the Bursary staff,” he said.

Prof. Georgewill commended the Bursar, Dr Godpower Obah, for the innovation, stressing the importance of continuous learning in financial management. He also recommended that participants be awarded certificates to recognise their engagement in the knowledge exchange process. “We commended the Bursar, Dr. Godpower Obah, for this innovation. We urged that participants be given certificates of participation in this knowledge exchange process,” he stated.

Beyond the lecture series, the University community was in high spirits as the Bursary Department officially commenced Bursary Week—a week-long programme designed to equip staff while fostering relaxation and camaraderie. The event, which took place in February 2025, featured several activities, including a Health Walk, Health Talk, Football Competition, Lecture/Training, and a Thanksgiving Service.

The activities provided members of the Bursary Department with an opportunity to retool themselves for the tasks ahead while also creating an atmosphere for leisure and team bonding. Still speaking, the Vice-Chancellor praised the Bursar’s vision for implementing such an impactful programme.

“We commend the Bursar, Dr. Godpower Obah, for his initiative in introducing such a week-long programme aimed at rejigging the Department,” he noted.
