Federal Government Urges Ogoniland Residents to Support Ongoing Remediation Efforts
The Federal Government has issued a strong reminder to the residents of Ogoniland about the importance of supporting the ongoing remediation of oil-impacted sites in the region. The call was made by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, during the commissioning of water projects in the Bunu and Beeri communities.
Minister Lawal emphasized that community involvement is crucial for the longevity and effectiveness of the remediation efforts and the newly completed water projects. He urged locals to take an active role in safeguarding these initiatives for their long-term benefits.
In his address, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, the project coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), highlighted that the commissioning of the water scheme is a testament to the commitment to implementing the recommendations outlined in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report.
Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represents the Rivers South-East district, remarked that forthcoming legislation would further empower HYPREP in its mission and enhance the impact of its projects.
The Minister of Environment was joined at the event by notable figures including Senator Magnus Abe and Dumnamene Dekor, the member representing Khana/Gokana federal constituency, as well as the UN Resident Coordinator, Mohammed Malick Fall.
