Three individuals are now feared dead following a devastating fire that engulfed the NNPC facility in Cawthorne Channel One, Bonny Local Government Area, exactly one week ago. The facility, which is jointly operated by NNPC Limited and OML 18 Energy Limited, witnessed a large-scale inferno that has raised concerns within the local community.
The Iloamatoru Community Surveillance Committee has confirmed the fatalities, directly contradicting a claim by NNPC Limited that no lives were lost in the incident. Daniel Pollyn, the committee’s immediate past chairman, stated that three corpses, believed to be the remains of the victims, have been recovered.
“The community has rejected the relief materials provided by NNPC Limited,” Pollyn remarked. “Instead, we are demanding that the company take responsibility for cleaning up the devastation caused by the fire and its oil exploration activities.”
In light of the tragedy, Pollyn urged oil multinationals operating in the region to implement stringent safety measures to prevent future incidents. He emphasized the need for corporate responsibility in ensuring the safety of both workers and the surrounding community.
The situation continues to unfold as the community grapples with the aftermath of the fire and demands accountability from the companies involved.
