Sunday Olapade, the top-ranked male professional golfer in Nigeria, on Thursdy earned a place in the prestigious DP World Tour, a significant achievement for his career.
The DP World Tour, sponsored by the Emirati company DP World, hosts golf tournaments globally. It was formerly called the European Tour before its rebranding.
DP World operates ports worldwide, and the tour’s events are renowned in professional golf. Olapade secured his spot at the Magical Kenyan Open, part of the series.
NAN reports that Olapade is the third Nigerian to achieve this feat, following in the footsteps of the late Christian Godfrey and Andrew Oche-Odoh.
“I feel so elated to have come this far. This is a big deal, and I’m happy that it’s happening now.
“This win is for all golf enthusiasts. I want more support for golfers like me. The DP World Tour begins today, and I wish myself the best,” Olapade said.
Oche-Odoh, a former number one player, expressed joy over Olapade’s achievement. “It’s a major feat. Congratulations, Olapade, well deserved,” he said.
Oche-Odoh shared his own experiences qualifying for the DP World Tour. “We are good for it. Olapade’s success brings nostalgic feelings,” he noted.
“We need to support him. He’s done well, and he deserves all the backing,” Oche-Odoh said.
