Prof. Wahab Egbewole, Vice-Chancellor (VC), University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), says the 2025 World Education Day theme aligns with the institution’s belief in the usefulness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2025 World Education Day, celebrated annually on Jan.24, had its 2025 theme as “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation”.

Egbewole said this in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday in Ilorin by Mr Kunle Akogun, UNILORIN Director of Corporate Affairs.

According to him, this year’s theme centres on the usefulness of AI in the education sector, and it is appropriate and forward-looking.

“UNILORIN recognises the critical role education plays in preparing future leaders to navigate the evolving landscape, so the theme aligns perfectly with our giant strides in the area of AI.

“Our commitment is to equip our students with the knowledge and skills needed to harness the potentials of AI for societal progress,” Egbewole said.

“We recently trained 21 of our students on the use of AI, and we have plans to sponsor 500 more for the exercise.

“The training is aimed at encouraging the beneficiaries to acquire and expand needed skills in the exploration and deployment of AI for innovations and future career progression.

“UNILORIN has always been at the forefront of promoting excellence in education and community development,” he said.

According to the VC, the university currently runs a “SMART agenda”, which emphasises the use of technology to enhance teaching, learning, and research.

Egbewole said the institution invested heavily in digital infrastructure, including a state-of-the-arts data centre and a robust network that supported online learning.

He also said plans to establish an AI centre was already in advanced stages, while the centre for cybersecurity was currently, coordinating the AI endeavours of the university.
